Have you ever heard of an object parable? I hadn't either until tonight at the service that our youth group took, and we got a double dose of them. We also had a good time of Praise and a really challenging and moving sermon from Charlie.
Grace explained to us that as Jesus talked to the people He met in ways that they would understand and be able to remember, and as such herself and Chris were going to give us the 2012 version of this. She talked about the light switch and how it has one use which is to turn light on and off. The light switch is connected by wires, has a power source and needs to be switched on for it to work. This equates to being connected to other Christians through friendship, connected to God through prayer and switched on by the Holy Spirit for our light to shine out.
Chris gave the second object parable which was of a cup. Chris told us that a cup could be used in many different ways. It could be filled with water, rice, sweets or other things like drawing pins, pens and nails. It could be part of a tea service. It can also be ignored and left in the cupboard. It could be a gift but it cannot do anything by itself, it needs to be used by someone. As Christians, we need to allow God to use us. We can serve him in many ways. We can Praise Him, talk to others about Him, encourage people who are sad or discouraged. We were asked to remember the cup and be ready for our Master to fill us and you us for His purpose.
Charlie spoke to us primarily from Deuternomy chapter 8, about being thankful for what God has done for us. Often we can forget what God has done for us. We forget that we have the ability to read, to write, to walk run and dance. That we can sleep safely in our beds at night. That we can praise God with no fear of death or persicution. In so many areas of our lives, we have so many reasons to praise God. This short video was played:
Charlie challenged us to look at different aspects of our lives and to realise just how much we have to thank God for. We watched this clip and it really opened my eyes to how much I take for granted. I am sure you too will watch it and feel the same.
